to him. >> beautiful woman, few ugly plane problems and key cabinet picks like chuck hagel. >> i came to admire his courage, his judgment, his willingness to speak his mind, even if it wasn't popular. >> turns out he's not too popular with some. >> chuck hagel, if confirmed to be secretary of defense, would be the most antagonistic secretary of defense toward the state of israel in our nation's history. >> profoundly wrong on some of the biggest national security threats confronting the united states today. >>> mechanical problems keep rolling in for boeing's 787 dreamliner. >> more like a nightmare. three of boeing's brand new planes suffered a slue of issues. >> fire and leaking fuel. >> error message related to the plane's braking system. >> all these little glitches that boeing says they are, or is there something else that's happening? >> reporter: nope. boeing says just growing pains. but airlines are growing impatient. >> they have a quality problem. and this quality problem should be resolved. >> reporter: speaking of problems. >> wow, i tell you quarterbacks, you get all the
and krauthammer believes it's no accident, and no accidents he chose chuck hagel to be the next defense secretary in his world view he'll do the the dismantling that president obama wants to do, tucker? >> yeah, i mean, that's, look, it's impossible to know always the president's motivations in these things, but there's no question about the fact that defense as you pointed out a second ago, is the one area where the president seems willing or even eager to make difficulties. is that an accident? probably not. look, the single largest driver of the debt and the deficit is medicaid. and medicare. and there's been no willingness on the part of this administration to even have real conversations about cutting that. whereas, they're eager to cut pentagon spending and you're going to see them try to effect that. >> megyn: you know, julie, when the president first took office, he took heat for what detractors called an apology tour and he went to the foreign countries and started to list what he perceived as flaws in america's behavior in the past and then to sort of try to account for them. and then y
be. rich: president obama will nominate former republican senator from nebraska chuck hagel to lead the department at the pentagon. a number of republicans have had issues with hagel. he has reportedly erected talks with hamas, some say he is not pro- israel enough. it has a number of republicans lined up against him in opposition. >> he has long severed ties with the republican party. this is an in-your-face nomination by the president. i do not know what is management experience is regarding the pentagon. i think it is an incredibly controversial choice. rich: this sets up a big fight in the u.s. senate. this at a time when those automatic defense cuts have been delayed for two months and that fiscal cliff deal. there are major questions in washington on defense spending going forward. this is a pretty timely opponent or appointment for the president when you consider all that is going on with not only the federal budget, but the defense budget. connell: thank you, rich edson. dagen: let's bring in matt welch. how do these nominations play into, again, the defense cuts that are on
are the nominations the president's made for his cabinet. you know, people may have differences with chuck hagel on this issue or that issue. but the guy is like jack armstrong all american. i mean he, you know, he was a war hero. he's lived an exemplary wife. he was a fine senator, highly respected. and he's the president's choice for secretary of defense. >> rose: why is he the president's choice? is it part-- i mean is this president in making the choices he has to make choosing people that he feels really good about, jack lew, john kerry o beyond their abilities, but also because there is some personal relationship there makes him say for the next four years, i really want to accomplish big things, i want people who i really know well, like well, who i believe are where i am? >> well, there's no doubt that he has confidence in them, that he feels,-- that he feels a connection with them, that he feels that they will faithfully execute-- . >> rose: would he have preferred ssz an rice to john kerry. >> susan rice say great friend of mine. and i think a spectacular public servant. you have proba
. there is no limit to your honesty. i am a proud vietnam veteran. i served when chuck hagel and his brother were there. what is it you can see that causes such a rift with the republicans went a democrat chooses a republican such as mr. chuck hagel. he has so much significant qualifications and knowledge of congress. that is the key thing. what: i guess we'll see the objections to a hagel are. i think hagel is a sound choice. i think the president has every right to nominate chuck hagel for this position. some statements he has made in the past need to be aired. my guess is that he will be confirmed by a large margin in the senate. the secretary of defense does not make foreign policy. the secretary of defense plays the primary role of bringing our defense department to bear to the service of the president. most people believe his qualifications are sound. he was a decorated hero, enlisted man in the vietnam war. there never has been an enlisted man like him as secretary of defense. the issues he is going to confront our budgetary issues and how well we can fund the pentagon and how we can cut b
speaking with authority, but is this not another good reason for chuck hagel's nomination because he, unlike so many of his fellow republicans, prefers to act cautiously when it comes to these forays over seas? >> well, two things. he prefers to act cautiously using war as a last resort instead of a rather more immediate choice as had been the case over the last decade, but he's also a big supporter of working multilaterally and that's why he had been so critical of the bush administration in iraq. the problem wasn't necessarily that going into afghanistan too quickly. it was that we got distracted for all those years in iraq and let the situation in afghanistan deteriorate. chuck hagel was right at the time in criticizing the bush administration on this. that's why it has long struck me you would want a man who does not want to rush into warfare as a first resort sitting there in charge of the pentagon. >> right. mike, on a slightly broader scale, are you at all concerned that this president's rightful desire to get our troops out of these entrenched and intractable conflicts, that
to talk with david gregory about chuck hagel but also bringing up the gop intolerance that he has witnessed and what he feels like exists now in d.c. take a listen. >> i think the republican party right now is having an identity problem. and i'm still a republican. i think what the republican party needs to do now is take a very hard look at itself and understand that the country has changed. the country is changing demographically. and if the republican party does not change along with the demographic, they're going to be in trouble. >> andrea, over the last 24 hours what's the reaction been in washington, d.c. to colin powell and what his thoughts are about the gop and the future? >> you know, colin powell does not do many interviews and he went on with david gregory to make the points about chuck hagel but also knowing he would be asked these questions because it's been very much on people's minds. where is the. party going? and i'm taking back to 2000 when i was covering the republican convention in philadelphia and colin powell gave his speech and at the time he was at the he
're about to see on capitol hill with confirmation hearings when they get under way with chuck hagel and others. >> yeah, john brennan. the president getting pushed back on his choice for cia director and defense secretary. both men now having to defend their records and some controversial statements in their past. we'll get the latest, straight ahead. >>> also ahead, emotional testimony at a preliminary hearing tied to that shooting massacre at a movie theater out in aurora, colorado. from the first police officers to arrive on that scene, what one young officer thought as he came face to face with the suspected gunman. >> on a different note, a different approach to fitness. a lot of folks walk into the gym and feel intimidated by the perfect bodies all around them. now there is a gym that is only for people who need to lose a lot of weight. if you're thin and trying to stay in shape, this is not the gym for you. we'll get into this new idea. >> but will those rules make it easier for people who really have a problem to get the job done? we'll see what that's all about. >>> and one
